Reflections on Mission

Reflections Day 1

Consumerism in the form of western food chains met my eyes first. The dirty, crowded streets of this capitol city in  Tegucigalpa are not unlike that of most other capitol cities in the world…at first glance.

Driving through the city to AFE, we first passed a shopping mall with appearances equal to that of any in my own home state of Florida. But upon further driving I quickly saw why this is a third world country.

House upon house on this mountainous land are stacked one upon the other and side by side. The windowless houses are made of crumbling bricks and  gray stone with the occasional brightly painted dwellings rising to the surface in bright blues, oranges, and yellows.

House upon house, row upon row of crumbling dwellings turn into cardboard shelters built upon resourceful foundations of tires piled five high to protect against erosive rainy seasons.

Beautifully dirty, brown skinned children walk home from school, slide down one-rail banisters into busy streets. Roads filled with the constant sounds of beeping horns vying for taxi customers and right of ways primarily void of stop signs and traffic lights.

As we near AFE’s school campus, the smell of trash wafts through the air. I am reminded  how this woman was once a girl who avoided Saturday’s trip to the land fields most weekends has now grown into a woman purposely seeking out the poorest of the poor in the trash dump of Tegucigalpa, Honduras.

In the foe leather seats of the school bus, I remember that missions is God’s love poured on the saved inviting them, commanding them, to serve His created people and make disciples of all nations. God has invited me into His glorious work among a loved people whose outward poverty and physical uncleanliness signify the filthy rags of righteousness I offer Him.

AFE, Amor Fe y Esperanza, translates to Love, Faith, and Hope, and is the ministry we are partnering with through Lakeland based Student Ministry Essentials. AFE works strictly with the people of Teguicigalpla that live and work on the trash dump.

We were given a tour by one AFE employee, Adam. He told us of the daycare/preschool program for the babies of workers who would otherwise join thier parents’ in a days work on the trash dump if it were not for this program at AFE.

Each day 14 brown-skinned, brown-eyed toddlers are brought to AFE for bathtime, two meals, and two snacks. They are taught skills commenserate with their learning leavels and are loved on with the hands and hearts of God’s servants at AFE.

Next, Adam invites us to go into the building and look at the school rooms and see the children. It is nap time and the room is dark.

Approaching those sleeping or resting children their cautious brown eyes stare out of railed cribs; some stacked two cribs high. I instantly want to touch them with the love God has given me for children. I desire to speak a blessing over them and extend the love that is theirs for the taking.

I smile and wave as I follow team members doing the same. I slip my camera away as some moments are to be soaked and simply remembered. These are God’s children wordlessly communicating why we have come.

I lay my right hand on a sleeping boy who reminds me of my own precious son miles away and pray a blessing over him. As I turn to look again at a timid little boy intently watching our white-skinned team invade his haven, I see a male teammate trying to keep the puddles in his eyes from getting the better part of him.

We step back outside into the sonlight and more of our team file out. Jesus loves the little children and uses them to speak to His beloved bride and we await more words from Him this week as we serve.

I want to leave you with some prayer requests for the ministry of AFE. In our tour of the school challenges were conveyed so as to paint a picture of the culture and everyday lives of the students within their ministry. Adam did not mention any of these specifically to pray for; this is what I walked away with. Please take a few moments to pray over these today.

1. Pray for the retention of male students. In a culture where males are pressured to work as early as possible and start families of their own. The delayed gratification of a greater return with a completed education is marginalized.
2. Pray for the direction of the school that they may continue to know and do the will of God with the resources He has blessed them with.
3. Pray for workers; specifically for medical partnerships in the community to address the many needs of the students and their families.

Show and Tell

The last two months it has become a common occurrence. Emily rushes to her coloring basket overflowing with paper, stickers, and coloring books. She selects crayons from the drawer and begins to make art in the fashion she knows best.

She colors and presses on stickers; occasionally she stamps love on a page.

Other days she gathers her water color palette and brushes then asks me to pour a cup of water. She wants to paint love on a page.

After each creation is completed she runs to me, waving her masterpiece in the air and declares, “This is for Pamela Jasmin!”

Pamela Jasmin is Ron’s Compassion Child. She lives in Honduras where my mission team will be flying this Friday. It seems surreal that it is two more days til foreign soil. Last year Ron traveled with the team and met Pamela Jasmin for the first time.

Our children know that they have a “brother” and “sister” in different countries. We sing Happy Birthday to them on their birthdays each year, are able to send them money for Christmas presents, and write letters to let them know we are praying for them and they are loved. Both of Joshua and Emily’s siblings are older than they and speak Spanish. Jefri is 11 and lives in Nicaragua and Pamela Jasmin is 6 and lives in Honduras.

While she has never met Pamela or Jefri face to face, Emily is perhaps their most fervent prayer warrior. Ron and I pray for and love our Compassion kids but it is Emily who petitions God on their behalf each night before bed time. She has helped in purchasing gifts to send to Pamela Jasmin on our trips the last two years and multiple times in between she has asked to give her many of her toys.

Through our Compassion sponsorship, Emily, and Joshua in turn, are learning to be givers. They are learning the truth of Christ when He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

At her prompting, I started collecting Emily’s artwork for Pamela Jasmine. They are neatly collected in a green folder to be presented to her in six days.  I will tell Pamela of the gift given by the One who sets us free. Being in the Compassion program the gospel is shared with her on a daily basis at the school she attends as part of her sponsorship, but this time I am the one blessed to share the good news with her.

I will show Pamela Emily’s art of love colored on a page and tell her of Christ’s love written on the pages of history but orchestrated for her before time began.

Would you like to add a child into your family today? Would you make a difference in the world by changing the life of even one? Visit Compassion’s website to find out more and please join us in making disciples of all nations because by your giving you are helping write God’s story in the life of a child. You can show and tell a lost and dying world of God’s love that is written on a page in crimson shades…

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

Abiding Joy

Abiding in God’s love brings fullness of joy.

060

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

~John 15: 4, 9-11

May we abide in his love and experience fullness of joy together today. Praying for you friends.

Living

How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.

~Henery David Thoreau

VBS …

Indoor play due to Debby…

Then finally a break in the weather and beautiful Florida sunshine…

We lived a full life the last two weeks and the next two promise even more. Today is our home study for foster care/adoption. Ron leaves for Paris and then a few days later I leave for Honduras. Much lived…much to come.

Next week I may be a little infrequent writing here as I hope to live more like Joshua in this picture before setting foot in foreign soil.

I so appreciate your prayers and would welcome you to let me know your requests so that I can petition God on your behalf. Feel free to leave a prayer request in the comment section or e-mail me by clicking on the e-mail link under my picture on the right hand side of the page.

And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.

To Be Known

You search out my path and my lying down and are acquainted with all my ways. ~Psalm 139:3

We had talked about familiarity on the ride home. “Why is it that when you first start dating your mate those butterfly tingly feelings are there but as your progress in your marriage relationship they come and go?” This after he put his hand on my leg.

For me it seemed a dangerous question to ask Ron. Like saying hey, I don’t get all warm and fuzzy when we hold hands (although it is something I like very much). He responded that it is because we are familiar with each other.

I awoke the next morning thinking about our conversation and the above words of Psalm 139. God is familiar with all my ways and the level to which I can continue to know Him is never ending. As I come to know more of Christ and become familiar with His teachings and His ways there is always more to be learned. Similarly in my marriage relationship, although I am familiar with Ron and he with me, we are changing and growing so that there is always something more to know and discover.

Awaking with Psalm 139 on my mind and these thoughts racing through my head, I knew it was impossible to return to sleep so I gave in and awoke to some early morning reading. Here is what I read:

That ache in your heart to be known by and to truly know one man was placed in you to be a revelation of a much deeper love. When you are in intimate physical and emotional communion with your husband, it will be a mere picture of the passionate love of a God who has been seeking your heart since before you were born. ~ Dannah Gresh, What Are You Waiting For? The One Thing No One Ever Tells You About Sex

In Psalm 139 we read of how God knows us. The Hebrew word for know in this case is yada. Yes, like yada, yada, yada, blah, blah, blah! Yada is a verb which means to know, to be known, to be deeply respected. In Dannah’s book she reveals how this verb is used to describe how God knows us and also how a husband knows a wife in their physical, spiritual, and emotional union.

I knew the the Bible is full of references to Christ loving the church as his bride and how a husband should love his wife as Christ loves the church, but yada?, that was new to me.

In, What Are You Waiting For?, Dannah teaches about Christ’s intentions for marriage and the physical union in marriage. She addresses purity from all angles presenting the facts on such issues as premarital sex, pornography, self pleasing, and homosexuality. This is a must read for parents, students, and singles of all ages. These are topics that we must address with our young people or the world will address it for them contrary to the ways of Christ.

In aiming to restore godly marriages in our culture and for the continuity of the church this is an important read.

See Dannah talk about the book in her FOX News interview here.

Thanks for taking time out of your day to read what is written here!

Looking for the Rainbow

I should have known it was a drama storm when I saw soggy carpet in the passengers seat and water splotches on the roof of the car. I mumbled some complaints and made it out the drive when I realized I had forgotten my cell phone. “What if we break down? I don’t exactly know how much water is in the car and if it will cause car trouble?” I thought. “Ugh!” I cried as I shook my fists in the air and then turned the car around to retrieve the phone.

That is when she started praying:

“Please Father God get us to church safely.”

Now that is the reaction that I should have had instead of stubborn and proud fists flying,” I said to myself. After finding my phone under a stack of books and papers I had been reading that morning I was once again buckling up and listening to Emily lay her request before the Lord to ask Him for safe travel.

She remembers our wreck from a year ago. She knows that danger sometimes comes very unexpectedly; she knows who to call in times of need.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

~Psalm 121:1-2

We are here later than usual Lord, where will we find a parking spot? Please let it be close I don’t think I can handle a long walk with two children and a large umbrella this morning.” I silently prayed as I told the kids we should be hoping for a spot. Then it happened the third time:

Dear Lord thank you for getting us safely to church. Please help us find a parking spot.”

“Emily, thank you for praying again taking all our needs to God like He tells us to in the Bible. And you started with telling Him thank you – that is exactly what He tells us to do as well!” I said. I had read those truths in Philippians 4:6 that morning so I rattled them off to her and Joshua as we continued to search out our spot. We soon found one in a grassy area as close to an entrance as I could hope for.

As I tried my best to remain calm and gracious-not to mention dry- I struggled with the wind and the large umbrella. “How would the Proverbs 31 woman look carrying her children into church by herself in the middle of severe weather?” I remained unsure but I sincerely wanted to give that woman a piece of my mind.

The morning at church went beautifully. Someone took my nursery duty as Joshua was sick and he and I got to worship together and play on my iPhone during service. I noticed he was half listening when Pastor Willy would say “God” or “never ever,” a phrase Joshua and Emily have picked up, Joshua would look up from his playing to watch and listen more intently.

The rain poured on and on as Tropical Storm Debby conveyed she was clearly a hormonal woman that poured tear after tear all day and into the night.

Upon awakening this morning Emily came out of her room and rushed to the window and said,

“I want to see the rainbow.”

This stilled me. She awoke seeking the promises of God.

Although she couldn’t see it I told her that did not mean it was not there.

After breakfast we dressed and put on our rain-boots to survey the debris from the storm. Walking back to the house I looked up to the sky and there it was, God’s promise arched over the sun. His glory on display. His faithfulness a banner.

This rainbow was visible only through the lenses of sunglasses but perhaps that is how He intended it.

It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.

~Proverbs 25:2

Emily’s prayers, her seeking the promise of God’s rainbow, these were fruit that God allowed us to see today. As we try to construct a Christian world-view for our children to reference and claim as their own they are listening and simultaneously He is teaching us far more than we could have imagined.

We should praise Him in the storm.

Surely Goodness…

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

~Psalm 23:5-6

God’s goodness is that disposition which causes him actively to seek the wellbeing of his creature. His mercy is that quality that inclines him to relieve misery. Because he had seen so very much of God’s faithful care in every conceivable situation, David knew he could count on God’s goodness and mercy every step of the way.

Ellsworth, R. (2006). Opening up Psalms (51–52). Leominster: Day One Publications.

Anointing with oil originated in Egypt and then assimilated to the Greeks and Romans then other nations. Olive oil was used for anointing, not only as a part of ceremony in the coronation of kings, but also at the installation of High Priest and as a hospitality toward guests. Anointing a guest was a sign of hospitality and courtesy; an act to say the guest would be taken care of, provided for, and protected within the confines of the home and their stay therein.

For those in Christ Jesus we are guests at God’s table.

Perhaps today you would say, “I could use a cup that is overflowing, an anointing of my head with the oil of protection, the surely goodness portion of this Psalm.” It is there for the taking my friends! No matter the circumstances without or within our beings the promises and principles of Psalm 23 persist.

This banqueting table is prepared for those crushed in spirit and of a humble and contrite heart who tremble at God’s word:

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

~Psalm 34:18

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:  “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

~Isaiah 57:15

All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD.  But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.

~Isaiah 66:2

Yesterday I celebrated my 31st birthday. Sweet cards that brought tears to my eyes and needed encouragement to my soul came in from my mom and grandmother. Ron drew me a card (one of my favorite things he does) and Emily signed her name all by herself.

Well wishes and words of affirmation were written on my Facebook wall. These kindnesses were gifts from family and friends, many of whom I have not seen in decades. (When you are 31 you can start saying things like, “I haven’t seen them in decades.”) One such gift was a little video posted to my Facebook wall. I want to share this with you today as you receive the anointing of oil alongside the overflowing cup of God’s goodness. Surely His goodness will follow all the days of my life…

The Desire for Holiness

Red velvet cake…perfection on a plate.

For two days I gazed at the red layers tempted by their sugary goodness-like no other to my taste buds I might add- and desired to eat more and more until it was gone. However, I had resolved not to eat anymore of this type food for a set amount of days.  As I studied the red and white layers, knowing the richness that awaited in one bite, I thought, “This is a perfect picture of temptation.”

Josh and Emily-0049

I could have silently eaten of a sliver but God would have known that I was breaking my vow. What good is a vow that is broken? Aren’t the sins we commit in the hidden places the ones that haunt our psyches the most?

I will not eat of you but I will look at you, imagine eating you, and smell you once or twice.

That which tempts us promises a quick return but a length of days to undo…that is if redemption is an option. Some disobedience ends in a final verdict: an unwanted or terminated pregnancy, killing a person while driving intoxicated, loss of property you have gambled away.

I addressed this temptation the only way that I know how to with 100% success: I took it to my husband’s workplace for others to eat!

This post said it so well, our sin affects more than a party of one. It snowballs to all who follow us, depend on us, and look to us with some degree of respect. If so, then the counter must be true as well:

Our holiness not only protects the direction of our lives, it also extends to the lives of our family, friends, community and therefore the world.

How holy do we truly desire to be? Holy enough, or to the standard of God’s word? Will we obey all His commands or will we obey… enough?

The apostle John said, “My dear children, I write this to you so that you will not sin” (1 John 2:1). The whole purpose of John’s letter, he says, is that we not sin. One day as I was studying this chapter I realized that my personal life’s objective regarding holiness was less than that of John’s. He was saying, in effect, “Make it your aim not to sin.” As I thought about this, I realized that deep within my heart my real aim was not to sin very much. I found it difficult to say, “Yes, Lord, from here on I will make it my aim not to sin.”

Yet if we have not made a commitment to holiness without exception, we are like a soldier going into battle with the aim of not getting hit very much. We can be sure if that is our aim, we will be hit — not with bullets, but with temptation over and over again.

~Jerry Bridges, The Pursuit of Holiness (emphasis mine)

If I am being honest with myself, there is a limit to the level of holiness that I presently pursue… that I desire.  How to rectify this? Well, sending “it” to my husband’s workplace is not always an option! Here are some others to employ:

  1. Prayer. Pray that the Holy Spirit would give you the desire to seek holiness and the power to live a holy life.
  2. Scripture memory. Dr. Walp taught us about making memories which are set apart. (Read his post here.) We must have God’s word in our heart so that the Holy Spirit will call scriptures to mind in order for us to make wise and holy choices.
  3. Practice discipline and self-control. This requires 1. and 2.
By this we may know that we are in him: whoever says he abides in him ought to walk in the same way in which he walked.  ~ 1 John 2 5b-6

Making Memories Set Apart

Please welcome our friend and Pastor of Family Ministries, Dr. Aaron Walp, today at This Temporary Home.  I know his teaching will encourage you to love God with all your mind. Thank you Dr. Walp for being our guest.

Memory… is the diary that we all carry about with us. ~Oscar Wilde

I have heard it said that you are a compilation of your collective memories. That is, due to your unique life experience you are who you are. For me, I never enter an ocean, lake, or bathtub without considering the remote possibility that Jaws may be in there waiting on me. The smell of hay triggers thoughts of hard work and great friends, as we spent weeks filling two barns with hay for the oncoming winter. The colors of fall propel my mind to moments of anticipation for the upcoming hunting season. And several large novels could not contain the memories of my life.

Grand Canyon GTD Sept. 2012 127

It is said, that no culture is more consumed with memories than the Jewish people. For example, they have a tradition of reciting specific scripture verses called the Shema. It is three texts from two books of the Torah. The first section is from the book of Deuteronomy 6:4-9 and is a command to love God and teach this love to one’s children. The other passages, Deuteronomy 11:13-21 and Numbers 15:37-41 address the need to obey God’s commands and remember them daily. The faithful recite these passages once in the morning and once at night, and if they have children, they will involve them in the prayer.

In essence, the chosen nation is both remembering as well as making memories for themselves and their children. The idea is that while experiencing times of need, abundance (yes, especially in good times), anger, and temptation, the child’s memories of what God has said will be what they use to make their decision on how to respond. If all one has to recall is humanistic answers, they will likely fail the test set before them, the daily test of life.

God desires His creation to love Him in return for the love He has shown and shows us. He has created a world with such precision that modern science cannot even begin to grasp its complexity. He has built in incomprehensible beauty, intellectual depth, and inconceivable astrological features that boggle and confound the greatest of minds. He is aware of life’s difficulties, unfathomable heartache, miserable moments, and the decisive pull of our sinful heart to run from Him. And it is because of this that He lovingly asks us to make memories that are set apart from this dead world filled with difficult days. He wants His children to be able to focus on things which only exist in the Savior, Jesus Christ. That is, things that are true, honest, just, pure, lovely, commendable, excellent, or worthy of praise (Philippians 4:8). Nothing in this world can fulfill this incessant desire for completeness but the word of God. And it is one’s memory of His word through reading, studying, and memorizing it daily that one reaches this pinnacle.

Cup-Bearers for the King

My mom and dad paid for over 16 years of dance lessons. They started because I was initially clumsy and couldn’t alternate my feet when walking upstairs at the age of two.  My love for dance continued and for this reason I like to watch So You Think You Can Dance on a fairly regular basis during the season.

Wednesday night I tuned into the last 20 or so minutes of the show and was disheartened. There on the screen was a beautiful young woman. However, her audition costume was one resembling what a bride should wear in the marriage bed the first night of married life. I think you know what I mean.

In an interview with the contestant she told how as a young girl she was shy and withdrawn. Her parents put her in dance. Now,  20 years later, she is auditioning in front of an audience of millions, scantly clad and performing a burlesque jazz number.

I have to ask, Is this the result her parents were hoping to gain when they put their precious preschooler in dance?

I am of the thought the more skin revealed, the more sexual behaviors portrayed, the more loudly the heart cries, “See me? Am I enough? Can you tell me I am enough and I am beautiful? Can you tell me I am worth dying for and fighting for? Do you notice me?”

Let me just say that I did not watch this young woman’s dance. I fast forwarded through her performance. Although I am a woman myself I wanted to uphold these words:

Your eye is the lamp of your body. When your eye is healthy, your whole body is full of light, but when it is bad, your body is full of darkness.  ~Luke 11:34

Turn my eyes from looking at worthless things; and give me life in your ways. ~ Psalm 119:37

You have heard that it was said, You shall not commit adultery. But I say to you that everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, tear it out and throw it away. For it is better that you lose one of your members than that your whole body be thrown into hell. ~ Matthew 5:27-29

Please know that I was not tempted by this beautiful young woman. However, I know that the dance she was doing was not meant for my eyes nor the eyes of anyone but her husband.

Now back to those questions from earlier especially as they relate to Father’s Day. Dad’s are meant to present the cup of Living Water to their children. They are to be the cup-bearers of their Father telling God’s little girls and boys whose they are and that for which they should hunger and thirst.

A guest pastor on Sunday, Dr. Charles Lowery, put it this way, “We should be telling our children, ‘You are God’s little boy. You are God’s little girl.'” In this way we are imparting the knowledge of whose they are and portraying the practices of how they should act.

Niagra-0150

In being a cup-bearer of the Living Water of Christ Jesus parents are filling that void in children’s hearts that say, “Am I enough? What is my purpose? Is there more to this life than my own fleeting pleasures? Isn’t it all about me?”

I am so thankful for a father and a mother who trained me in the way that I should go at an early age. I remember in particular one evening where I was sitting inches from the television screen pointing to a long line of beautiful majorettes and saying, “I want to look like her, and her, and her, and her.” Then shaking my head and adding, “Not like her.”

My dad pulled me aside and told me that it doesn’t matter what we look like on the outside; it is what is on the inside that counts. He continued that we shouldn’t make fun of people because of their size or looks. These words combined with my mother’s constant, “Pretty is as pretty does,” resonated in my young heart… although I only truly understood what my mom was communicating when I was a mother myself.

To those dad’s, like the one my children have, who present the cup of Living Water to God’s children they have been entrusted with, Happy Father’s Day. Continue to do well God’s good and faithful servants. Press on and press in and look out for the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour.

To those fathers who have misplaced or replaced the Living Water in their life, I offer the words of your Father in Heaven of Isaiah 55.

Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and he who has no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. ~Isaiah 55:1

Father’s, as soldiers of the Living God and cup-bearers for the King, once you drink the cup the Lord extends to you, turn and pour a cup for the children He has entrusted to you. Walk in the way of the Lord’s commands and watch as a nation will rise up and praise His Holy Name.

It isn’t too late for the young woman on the dance show. Why not join me now in praying that a full cup of the Living Water would be served up in her presence?
