Needing More Jesus

Some nights our children enter bed time with ease, and other times, oh but other times, it is a wrestle to the finish line.

Last night was one of those nights, or at least it started out that way. Tears cried and consequences fell and yet our little one would not stay in her room. “But I miss Nana!”

Nana is what the kids call my mom. Both of my parents had left earlier in the week from a long weekend visit. To say the kids love them is an understatement.

I finally looked my child in the eye and said, “You need more Jesus that is who you need.” After a few more sentences I told her that I need more Jesus too. I need to be more thankful instead of crying over what is gone or what isn’t going my way.

I need more Jesus, and don’t I need to learn the very lessons that I try persistently to teach my children?

Honor God… follow the golden rule…remember we are on the same team.

It is true, I am the mom and I do know more than my kids; but it is also true that I am learning the same lessons multiple times over because I am so apt to forget.

Humility in every area of life, in every relationship with other people, begins with a right concept of God as the One who is infinite and eternal in his majesty and holiness. We are to humble ourselves under God’s mighty hand, approaching every relationship and every circumstance in reference to him. When relationships with people are good and circumstances are favorable, we are to humbly receive these blessings from his gracious hand. When people are mistreating us and circumstances are difficult, we are to humbly accept them as from an infinitely wise and loving heavenly Father.

~ Jerry Bridges, The Practice of Godliness

She calmed as I began to speak all that I am thankful to God for. Because those who need more Jesus must recognize His hand on their lives each day. I said, “I am thankful for:”

  • our home
  • your health
  • how you help your brother
  • the fun we had today
  • a comfortable bed and sheets
  • a door to lock
  • a safe neighborhood to live in
  • all of our family

“What are you thankful for Emily?”

“Fish”

“What kind of fish?”

“Stingrays.”

“I am thankful for stingrays too. That is good. What else?”

“Birds.”

“What kind of birds?”

“Peacocks.”

“We will look for some peacocks tomorrow when we drop daddy off at work, okay?”

Remembering  Jesus’ works today gives us something to look forward to tomorrow. We must give thanks in humility, knowing that every good and perfect gift is from above and every difficult situation may provide a window to purer relationship with God and man.

I know I need more Jesus…and so do you. What can we thank Him for today?

Looking for Beauty in Tough Places 2

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law.

~Galations 5:22-23

On Wednesday we ended our time saying, “Lord, teach us to pray.” We are people who seek beauty, we know that, but often times our behaviors do not exemplify the beautiful life we seek.

Asking Christ to fill us with His Holy Spirit opens the door to answers, holiness, and God-honoring power thereby unleashing beauty in the tough places.

This weekend I pray for more of the Holy Spirit to reign in our lives. Before we enter situations or conversations, let us pause to seek God’s will in all of our interactions.

Prepare us oh Lord to do thy will.

You can do more than pray, after you have prayed, but you cannot do more than pray until you have prayed.

Looking for Beauty in Tough Places

The heavens are the LORD’s heavens, but the earth he has given to the children of man.

~Psam 115:16

Some days it is easy to see the beauty. Other days, amidst our clinched fists or tear soaked tissues, our psyches cry out for places of quiet beauty.

On Ron’s journey to Paris, Normandy, Oxford, and London, man and God’s beauty were on display. Brilliant architecture, sculpture, and art captured in his lens while the sacrifices of human life one for another were caught in his heart.

Today, are you in a tough place looking for beauty? Have you, like I, failed one to many times, or so it seems, at living life in obedience to God’s commands? Or, are you face to face with tragedy and heartache asking why?

I have to tell you that in writing this blog, I aim to create scribblings of beauty to bring glory to God and edification to His Body, but often-times at the point of my sin I question my authority to even write. I long to make this a beautiful life but I know my everyday ugly. I know my failings  and my utter ineptness to live out a perfect life. Further still,to an extent, I know what reality is out there confronting mankind everyday.

We live among people in tough places. Sometimes we are them. Being in a tough place is a spectrum term, because for all purposes my points of difficulty are someone else’s points of perceived blessing.

Perhaps we who are looking for beauty in tough places should ask as the disciples did in Luke 11:1, “Lord teach us to pray.” (See Luke 11:10-13)

In certain tough places we have not beauty because we ask not. If we were to ask, the Father would give us more of the Holy Spirit who supplies love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control… all of which lead to a beautiful life. Or, in the very least, a life lived beautifully.

Asking Christ opens the door to answers unleashing beauty in the tough places. Perhaps not answered in the way we imagined nor in the timing we hoped but with the One who is faithful and true.

Lord, teach us to pray…

Secrets of True Beauty

In preparation for my freshman year at Auburn University I was quizzing a godly woman who had gone to the plains of Auburn before me. It was only perhaps a five or ten minute conversation after church one Sunday night, but the words of wisdom shared have reverberated over the last 13 years. After recommending a few sororities at Auburn as I was preparing for rush, the woman looked at me and said, in essence, “Most importantly use this time to seek God. ‘Charm is deceptive and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.'” (Proverbs 31:30)

Those words took root in my heart.

I joined the same sorority that she had , and I am so thankful for that experience. Many of my friendships that I formed there spurred me on towards love and good deeds in Christ Jesus. However, it was the words of Proverbs graced on me that truly made my college experience. God used that 10 minute conversation and a lifetime of teaching from parents and church volunteers before her to impress upon me the need to study and learn God’s word.

While at Auburn, God placed many woman in my life who continued to pour out godly wisdom and sound teaching to lead me in the way that I should go. Women who were busy with families and small children of their own who made the time to mentor me.

If  I could give women of all ages the secret to true beauty, I would most assuredly utter the wisdom of Proverbs 31:30 and Matthew 6:33:

Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting, but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised…Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.

As well I would tell each woman to believe the words of Psalm 139 and their truth in her individual life:

I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.

Then in light of this knowledge, it is important that women of today heed the call of 1 Corinthians 3:16-17:

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? If anyone destroys God’s temple, God will destroy him. For God’s temple is holy, and you are that temple.

As Paul wrote in Colossians 3:1-17 we are to put on our new self. That is we are to “put to death what is earthly” in us and put on our “new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of our creator.” (Colossians 3:5, 10)

My challenge to you today is to look around you. What women or young ladies has God placed in your life? Are you studying God’s word so that you too can reach out to them and share the truth? It may be in a mentor relationship or a word aptly spoken at a given moment of opportunity that God will use you to impact eternity.

Is there someone that God has placed on your heart to minister to? If so, perhaps today is the day that you should take the first step in that direction. If not, then this is a season of preparation for ministry opportunities to come.

In a world with many inaccurate air brushed messages of skinny beauty, true beauty stands out among the crowd. Let us be women of true beauty found in the fear of the Lord.

10 Ways to Build a Beautiful Body

IMG_0597
The voices in my head do not always reflect the truth of Psalm 149, that I am fearfully and wonderfully made. That is not why I am using my picture above. Instead, I always believe that God’s Word opens the door to building a beautiful body in Christ Jesus.
In order to take care of our earthly bodies we must eat right, exercise, drink water, and get enough rest. But what about our corporate body of Christ? We started this discussion on Wednesday, and today we are reviewing 10 ways to build a beautiful body of Christ as found throughout the scriptures.

No calorie counting or squats on this list! However, resistance training and a heavy dose of discipline are required.

1.  Treat our personal body as the temple of the Lord by pursuing sexual morality.

1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 1 Thessalonians 4:1-8

2.  In like manner, for the married, love our spouse and remain faithful to him. Our marriage should be a picture of Christ and the church.

Ephesians 5:22-33,  Hebrews 13:4

3.  Recognize that all our assets come from and belong to God then use them according to His will.

Acts 4:32-35

4.  Use spiritual gifts to serve and edify the saved and to seek the lost.

Romans 12:4-8,10, 13; Acts 1:8; James 2:26

5.  Pray for persecuted Christians around the world and for their persecutors to come to Christ Jesus.

Hebrews 13:3, Romans 12:14-15

6.  Renew our minds by setting our thoughts on things above, through the reading of the scriptures, and prayer. Romans 12:1-2, Colossians 3:1-4, 16

7.  Take care of the orphaned and the widow.

James 1:27, 2:26

8.  Do not give up meeting together for corporate worship.

Hebrews 10:23-25

9.  Seek the unification of the body.

1 Corinthians 12:24-26, Ephesians 4

10. Love one another as Christ has loved us.

John 15:12-17

In building a beautiful body of Christ, as with pursuing to maintain health in our physical bodies, knowledge will only get us so far. It is the working out of that which we learn that brings us closer to our goals as well as our ideal state. Thankfully the Holy Spirit is within us to guide us and help us to attain that which Christ commands.

I challenge you to choose one of these ways to build a beautiful body. Research what the Bible says and then begin to pray that Christ will develop you in this area.  Let’s build some holy muscles shall we?

Show and Tell

The last two months it has become a common occurrence. Emily rushes to her coloring basket overflowing with paper, stickers, and coloring books. She selects crayons from the drawer and begins to make art in the fashion she knows best.

She colors and presses on stickers; occasionally she stamps love on a page.

Other days she gathers her water color palette and brushes then asks me to pour a cup of water. She wants to paint love on a page.

After each creation is completed she runs to me, waving her masterpiece in the air and declares, “This is for Pamela Jasmin!”

Pamela Jasmin is Ron’s Compassion Child. She lives in Honduras where my mission team will be flying this Friday. It seems surreal that it is two more days til foreign soil. Last year Ron traveled with the team and met Pamela Jasmin for the first time.

Our children know that they have a “brother” and “sister” in different countries. We sing Happy Birthday to them on their birthdays each year, are able to send them money for Christmas presents, and write letters to let them know we are praying for them and they are loved. Both of Joshua and Emily’s siblings are older than they and speak Spanish. Jefri is 11 and lives in Nicaragua and Pamela Jasmin is 6 and lives in Honduras.

While she has never met Pamela or Jefri face to face, Emily is perhaps their most fervent prayer warrior. Ron and I pray for and love our Compassion kids but it is Emily who petitions God on their behalf each night before bed time. She has helped in purchasing gifts to send to Pamela Jasmin on our trips the last two years and multiple times in between she has asked to give her many of her toys.

Through our Compassion sponsorship, Emily, and Joshua in turn, are learning to be givers. They are learning the truth of Christ when He said, “It is more blessed to give than to receive.” (Acts 20:35)

At her prompting, I started collecting Emily’s artwork for Pamela Jasmine. They are neatly collected in a green folder to be presented to her in six days.  I will tell Pamela of the gift given by the One who sets us free. Being in the Compassion program the gospel is shared with her on a daily basis at the school she attends as part of her sponsorship, but this time I am the one blessed to share the good news with her.

I will show Pamela Emily’s art of love colored on a page and tell her of Christ’s love written on the pages of history but orchestrated for her before time began.

Would you like to add a child into your family today? Would you make a difference in the world by changing the life of even one? Visit Compassion’s website to find out more and please join us in making disciples of all nations because by your giving you are helping write God’s story in the life of a child. You can show and tell a lost and dying world of God’s love that is written on a page in crimson shades…

For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

~John 3:16

Abiding Joy

Abiding in God’s love brings fullness of joy.

060

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.

As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.

~John 15: 4, 9-11

May we abide in his love and experience fullness of joy together today. Praying for you friends.

Living

How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live.

~Henery David Thoreau

VBS …

Indoor play due to Debby…

Then finally a break in the weather and beautiful Florida sunshine…

We lived a full life the last two weeks and the next two promise even more. Today is our home study for foster care/adoption. Ron leaves for Paris and then a few days later I leave for Honduras. Much lived…much to come.

Next week I may be a little infrequent writing here as I hope to live more like Joshua in this picture before setting foot in foreign soil.

I so appreciate your prayers and would welcome you to let me know your requests so that I can petition God on your behalf. Feel free to leave a prayer request in the comment section or e-mail me by clicking on the e-mail link under my picture on the right hand side of the page.

And whatever you ask in prayer, you will receive, if you have faith.

Looking for the Rainbow

I should have known it was a drama storm when I saw soggy carpet in the passengers seat and water splotches on the roof of the car. I mumbled some complaints and made it out the drive when I realized I had forgotten my cell phone. “What if we break down? I don’t exactly know how much water is in the car and if it will cause car trouble?” I thought. “Ugh!” I cried as I shook my fists in the air and then turned the car around to retrieve the phone.

That is when she started praying:

“Please Father God get us to church safely.”

Now that is the reaction that I should have had instead of stubborn and proud fists flying,” I said to myself. After finding my phone under a stack of books and papers I had been reading that morning I was once again buckling up and listening to Emily lay her request before the Lord to ask Him for safe travel.

She remembers our wreck from a year ago. She knows that danger sometimes comes very unexpectedly; she knows who to call in times of need.

I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.

~Psalm 121:1-2

We are here later than usual Lord, where will we find a parking spot? Please let it be close I don’t think I can handle a long walk with two children and a large umbrella this morning.” I silently prayed as I told the kids we should be hoping for a spot. Then it happened the third time:

Dear Lord thank you for getting us safely to church. Please help us find a parking spot.”

“Emily, thank you for praying again taking all our needs to God like He tells us to in the Bible. And you started with telling Him thank you – that is exactly what He tells us to do as well!” I said. I had read those truths in Philippians 4:6 that morning so I rattled them off to her and Joshua as we continued to search out our spot. We soon found one in a grassy area as close to an entrance as I could hope for.

As I tried my best to remain calm and gracious-not to mention dry- I struggled with the wind and the large umbrella. “How would the Proverbs 31 woman look carrying her children into church by herself in the middle of severe weather?” I remained unsure but I sincerely wanted to give that woman a piece of my mind.

The morning at church went beautifully. Someone took my nursery duty as Joshua was sick and he and I got to worship together and play on my iPhone during service. I noticed he was half listening when Pastor Willy would say “God” or “never ever,” a phrase Joshua and Emily have picked up, Joshua would look up from his playing to watch and listen more intently.

The rain poured on and on as Tropical Storm Debby conveyed she was clearly a hormonal woman that poured tear after tear all day and into the night.

Upon awakening this morning Emily came out of her room and rushed to the window and said,

“I want to see the rainbow.”

This stilled me. She awoke seeking the promises of God.

Although she couldn’t see it I told her that did not mean it was not there.

After breakfast we dressed and put on our rain-boots to survey the debris from the storm. Walking back to the house I looked up to the sky and there it was, God’s promise arched over the sun. His glory on display. His faithfulness a banner.

This rainbow was visible only through the lenses of sunglasses but perhaps that is how He intended it.

It is the glory of God to conceal things, but the glory of kings is to search things out.

~Proverbs 25:2

Emily’s prayers, her seeking the promise of God’s rainbow, these were fruit that God allowed us to see today. As we try to construct a Christian world-view for our children to reference and claim as their own they are listening and simultaneously He is teaching us far more than we could have imagined.

We should praise Him in the storm.

Surely Goodness…

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

~Psalm 23:5-6

God’s goodness is that disposition which causes him actively to seek the wellbeing of his creature. His mercy is that quality that inclines him to relieve misery. Because he had seen so very much of God’s faithful care in every conceivable situation, David knew he could count on God’s goodness and mercy every step of the way.

Ellsworth, R. (2006). Opening up Psalms (51–52). Leominster: Day One Publications.

Anointing with oil originated in Egypt and then assimilated to the Greeks and Romans then other nations. Olive oil was used for anointing, not only as a part of ceremony in the coronation of kings, but also at the installation of High Priest and as a hospitality toward guests. Anointing a guest was a sign of hospitality and courtesy; an act to say the guest would be taken care of, provided for, and protected within the confines of the home and their stay therein.

For those in Christ Jesus we are guests at God’s table.

Perhaps today you would say, “I could use a cup that is overflowing, an anointing of my head with the oil of protection, the surely goodness portion of this Psalm.” It is there for the taking my friends! No matter the circumstances without or within our beings the promises and principles of Psalm 23 persist.

This banqueting table is prepared for those crushed in spirit and of a humble and contrite heart who tremble at God’s word:

The LORD is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit.

~Psalm 34:18

For thus says the One who is high and lifted up, who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy:  “I dwell in the high and holy place, and also with him who is of a contrite and lowly spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly, and to revive the heart of the contrite.

~Isaiah 57:15

All these things my hand has made, and so all these things came to be, declares the LORD.  But this is the one to whom I will look: he who is humble and contrite in spirit and trembles at my word.

~Isaiah 66:2

Yesterday I celebrated my 31st birthday. Sweet cards that brought tears to my eyes and needed encouragement to my soul came in from my mom and grandmother. Ron drew me a card (one of my favorite things he does) and Emily signed her name all by herself.

Well wishes and words of affirmation were written on my Facebook wall. These kindnesses were gifts from family and friends, many of whom I have not seen in decades. (When you are 31 you can start saying things like, “I haven’t seen them in decades.”) One such gift was a little video posted to my Facebook wall. I want to share this with you today as you receive the anointing of oil alongside the overflowing cup of God’s goodness. Surely His goodness will follow all the days of my life…
