Considering Homeschooling?

homeschoolingpost

So you’re thinking about homeschooling? Welcome! I meagerly offer you the information that I have gleaned the last three years in the hopes that it will be profitable to you.

I sensed the Lord leading me to homeschooling after observing and interacting with the families of homeschooled students within our student ministry several years back. I had little to no exposure to homeschooling and didn’t think of it as an option for our family prior to those interactions.

After asking many questions, researching online, and attending our state homeschooling convention, Ron and I decided to give homeschooling a go. I have not regretted our decision once in the preschool and now kindergarten years of schooling. However, I have questioned my methods.

For example, at the beginning of this school year, I decided that I would teach math and reading without the aid of a curriculum. This may have worked, but by September I was feeling as if my child was behind, and her mother was in need of some structure. So, I spoke to a few veteran homeschooling moms and chose a math curriculum they suggested and the reading curriculum that I had loved at the homeschooling convention – A Beka math & The Logic of English. We are now enjoying the structure and freedom that the curriculums’ offer, and I feel better about the progress that my daughter is making in these areas.

Lesson learned: Don’t be afraid to change course when you feel you are off course.

I first heard of Classical Conversations through a local homeschool support group. After attending an informational presentation on the classical method of education, Ron and I decided to join a local community when our oldest was kindergarten age. This decision has been one of the best decisions we have made for our family concerning Christian education and teaching a biblical worldview. I love everything about the Classical Conversations curriculum developed by Leigh Bortins. The grammar introduced each week and the resources to help with memory mastery of each subject has made learning fun and given a natural flow to our days. As a bonus, I am redeeming my education! If anyone has obtained an education this year, it is definitely the homeschooling mom.

If you are interested in Classical Christian Education, please visit Leigh Bortin’s Classical Conversations website, here.

I am a proponent for Christian apologetics and feel the magnitude of making disciples of our children while teaching them to develop a biblical worldview. That being the case, I am so very thankful for the opportunity to use wonderfully paced, content-rich curriculum such as that developed for Classical Conversations.

Lesson Learned: God will guide your steps to the curriculum that is right for your family. Our family aligns with Christian Classical Education.

Often people will ask me how long we plan to homeschool. My answer is, “Until I feel God’s freedom and direction to choose another educational option.”  If God has called you to homeschooling – and no, I don’t think that everyone is called to homeschool for all or any season of their child’s education – then He will give you the answers you need in the time that is right.

Lesson Learned: Homeschooling is a calling for a season; God will show you the duration of that season be it a year or K-12.

At the end of the day we are all home educators; life is a classroom for those willing to learn. If you are considering homeschooling, here are a few websites/posts that may offer more direction:

God bless your journey,

Unpacking Christmas: The Gift

Unpacking Christmas The Gift

We entered the church foyer and beheld the grandeur of the towering tree adorned with red and golden hues. As is my custom, I paused to capture some of its beauty with my camera phone.

As I was taking the picture, Joshua paused with me and looked at the presents under the tree. I knew the presents were really empty boxes but his three-year-old perspective did not,”Are those presents for Jesus? When’s he going to open his presents?” he asked. His child-like faith that Jesus would come and open His presents for His birthday melted my heart. I stooped down to explain, “Those boxes are empty and only for decoration. Jesus is the Present, buddy. He came so that we could live in heaven with God.”

I am not sure if my explanation was sufficient, but I repeated, “Jesus is the Present.”

Jesus is The Gift, dear friends.

This Christmas as we bustle to complete shopping lists, bake seasonal dishes, and finish tying bows on presents, The Gift and The Giver of all good things deserves to reign supreme in our hearts and minds.

With each moment of this Christmas: baking cookies, sharing presents, singing carols, looking at Christmas lights,  and worshiping with a body of believers no act of love falls to the ground even if the events themselves do because the Holy Seed of Israel has come and conquered death.

I haven’t mastered the art of Christmas traditions in our family. We have plenty of December traditions:

Christmas Day presents a new opportunity for making traditions this year as it  will be the first year that we wake up in our house on Christmas morning before traveling to family celebrations in a neighboring state. However, The Gift, is the One that I want to honor and recognize this Christmas no matter how the events of the actual day unfold.

Merry Christmas dear readers! You are such a blessing to my heart. I find such peace and joy in writing in this little corner of the internet. I will meet you here after King Jesus’ Birthday. May God bless you and keep you and make His face to shine upon you and be gracious to you this Christmas season. Please take a few minutes to watch  the video link (click here if viewing in a reader) of children reciting the Christmas story; it will serve as our final reminder of Unpacking Christmas 2013.

Unpacking Christmas: The Empty Seat

Unpacking Christmas The Empty Seat

The first Christmas came pregnant with anticipation and the heralding of angels upon lowly shepherds in a dim-lit field. For thirty-three years Mary remembered the night her son, our Savior, was born. She pondered the events in her heart and poured over the man the Son had become. On the thirty-fourth year after His birth, she found herself celebrating an unexpected Christmas: God and Son reunited, mother and Son separated by heaven and earth.

As we remember this Christmas the angels heralding his birth, we too may find ourselves celebrating an unexpected Christmas like Mary’s 34th Christmas. A Christmas celebration marked by loss even as we are cradled in the cross of Christ. The Father empathizes with our empty place settings at the table this Christmas. He sees every tear and knows the aching of our hearts. The loved ones who are united now with the Father have left a scar on our souls; a separation that only death can bring. Thankfully death lost its final sting at the resurrection, and those who were in Christ in life now celebrate Christmas with the One of whom it was prophesied:

Surely he has borne our griefs and carried our sorrows; yet we esteemed him stricken, smitten by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.  All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned—every one—to his own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all. ~Isaiah 53:4-6

The separation from our loved ones is potentially temporary because Christ first separated Himself from the Father. He brought us peace in His pain and healing in His affliction. No one comprehends the sorrows of a grieving heart like the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Indeed He sympathizes with our weaknesses (Hebrews 4:15) and gives grace in our grief. As unexpected Christmas’s are celebrated all around the world, petitions are made to the One who brought us eternal peace asking Him to pour His healing balm on temporal suffering hearts once more.

Unpacking Christmas: Books

Unpacking Christmas Books for the Heart

A thoughtful, well illustrated book is a gift that continues to resonate long after “the end” is read. Last night we read a few Christmas books before bedtime and one happened to be a scratch and sniff book by Joan Walsh Anglund that I received as a young girl over 25 Christmas’ ago.  The real surprise…you can still scratch and sniff the pepper-minty pie, pepperoni pizza, and beautiful fir tree that Mary and Willie prepare for their Christmas party guests!

Below is a listing for the youngest to the oldest of readers to enjoy within your home this Christmas. I hope you experience the true meaning of Christmas in a fresh way this year and every one thereafter as you unpack these Christmas books in the years to come.

A special note to my readers without little children in this season of life, the last five books are for you. Enjoy!

Going Home

052

Our foster son entered our hearts and joined our family 13 months ago. This week he is likely going home. It is time, and we are thankful for the stretch of life we experienced together. Please keep us in your prayers and Little E most of all. With all the going home preparations and loose ends we are attending to, I will not be posting this week.

Thank you for your prayer support during our first foster experience!

I hope that your journey takes you nearer to the heart of God and learning of  His heart for you. See you back here next week.

How I Talk to Our Children About Evolution

144

“Hey mom!” My children greeted my return after a few hours out. “We’re watching Dinosaur Train.” Let it be noted, we do not regularly watch Dinosaur Train. Having never seen the program before, I was skeptical about the science taught in the cartoon. I hypothesized the worldview of the producers of the show would be naturalistic and teach that dinosaurs lived millions of years ago.

As I greeted the babysitter and asked how the children behaved themselves, I heard the cartoon explain, “This dinosaur lived during the Mesozoic Period.” Ding, ding, ding, my guess was correct; this show was teaching evolution, likely from a naturalistic standpoint. At the very least this was communicating a worldview and philosophy in direct conflict with the Christian Theistic worldview I aim to instill and live out before my kids. With the same scientific data, creationist and evolutionist arrive at two different conclusions. It is my job as their mother to draw these differences to their attention.

When Plans Fall Through

131

We have been told reunification was coming for over 6 months now. Little E has had four days of over night visits for the last 7 weeks. It was all set. We would stand before the judge in just a week and a half and wait for him to declare reunification of our foster son of over 1 year with one of his biological parents.

I have mentally made a list of all that I should pack and send “home” with him. How do you pack up a two year old who loves you as a mom and dad, and whom you love as a son, in any way that he will understand you are not another person to walk out of his life? That is a question I have mulled over for 4-6 months.

All the planning, all the crying, all the disciplining and decision making was to culminate and we were to find a new normal in a few short weeks.

That all changed with a phone call yesterday.

In short, one parent’s bad choices caught up with them and thank goodness before reunification had taken place. As these plans fall through we can shake our head at this adult’s repeated poor decision making, or we can say “thank God He revealed this before E was reunified.”

My mom told me earlier this week that her Sunday school class had a special time of prayer for us. Thanks be to God! The prayers of the saints are being heard and God’s will is going forward. We have seen the protective hand of God upon this child even and especially a midst all the pain that life has dealt him.

When plans fall through, when expectations stop short, when what we had anticipated dies, God is there with every twist and bend. He is there in every valley and mountain peak.

Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world. (John 16:33)

When plans fall through His arm is outstretched so that we do not fall but have hope,  joy, and peace that passes understanding though they may ebb and flow as the ocean tide.

What plans have fallen through for you today dear one? Have you entrusted your requests to God? Have you enlisted the prayer support of even one or two other individuals? God is not silent when your plans fall through. He uses the Body and His Word to speak love over your situation and grace in the presence of pain.

Take heart this weekend friends.

When Cancelled Plans Lead to a Better Path

Jason Mooney Falls

Often plans don’t go according to our schedule. Disappointments, delays, and roadblocks often test our ability to give thanks in all circumstances. A detour can threaten our peace of mind and unsettle our spirits. No doubt anyone who has lived a very short time can identify with disappointment…even kindergartners cry, “that’s not fair!”

Occasionally overturned plans lead to better paths.

So was the case with our trip to Arizona with Going the Distance Adventure Ministries (GTD). Leader and ministry founder, Doug Garner, joked he feared the government shutdown would lead to a Grand Canyonless trip to Arizona. However, due to Doug’s tenacity, tireless efforts, and the Lord’s blessing, we were able to experience abundantly more than Plan A had allowed for.

Initially, our itinerary included the choice of a  day hike to Plateau Point or a ride to the North Rim to conquer the 26 mile Rim to Rim hike in one day. Many of us had trained for months for this chance of a lifetime hike from Rim to Rim. We also planned hours of rest and relaxation in Williams, Flagstaff, and Sedona, Arizona. Conversely, with the government shutdown here is what we were able to experience as Doug’s Plan B:

  • Hiking (22 miles) and Camping in the Supai Indian portion of the Grand Canyon with the breathtaking views of Havasu Falls and Mooney Falls (which towers 26 feet above Niagara).

Interspersed between all of these beautiful sights was apologetic teachings on the world wide flood and the subsequent formation of one of the world’s natural wonders, the Grand Canyon by Dr. Aaron Walp. After two years listening to Dr. Walp’s teachings and a year of bits and pieces reading on my own, I can confidently say that the rocks are crying out to the glory of God. It is the glory of man to study and understand the story the rocks are telling.

It is God’s privilege to conceal things and the king’s privilege to discover them. (Proverbs 25:2, NLT)

As we have settled back into our “normal routines” I have pondered the lessons learned on our adventure. There are many to share, and many more pictures to help illustrate the lessons. I can’t wait to weave the stories and the spiritual truths together over the next few weeks with you as I share our pictures.

In the face of unexpected changes and revealed truths, God answers our prayers in His own way and time to bring about the most glory for Himself from all the nations.

Praise you Lord Jesus for safe travel and a Plan B that exceeded our expectations!

O God, listen to my cry! Hear my prayer! From the ends of the earth, I cry to you for help when my heart is overwhelmed. Lead me to the towering rock of safety, for you are my safe refuge, a fortress where my enemies cannot reach me. Let me live forever in your sanctuary, safe beneath the shelter of your wings! (Psalm 61:1-4, NLT)

The Salt and Light of Fostering

Salt and Light of Fostering

We continue to pour into the life that God has allowed to grow and flourish within our home for the last year. We, and those in our sphere, have sought to be the salt and light of Jesus to our child.  Today we await yet another decision on reunification with his biological parents. In the waiting, I would like to pause and remember our foster care journey as documented at This Temporary Home, and invite you to join me over at iBelieve to read my confessions as a first time foster mom. Click here to read this post.

Thank you for your prayers for our Little E. and thank you to the over twenty-five new e-mail subscribers of This Temporary Home in the last weekend. Your presence is an honor and a trust. Enjoy this look back with us at our foster journey from the earliest days to the present.
